Rural America is home to nearly 60 million people, yet these areas often face significant barriers to care. NRHD provides an important platform to bring attention to these issues and celebrate those committed to ensuring rural communities have access to the care they need.

What Rural America Healthcare Needs:

Increase the Number of Physicians in Rural America

Only 10% of physicians practice in rural communities. But, 25% of Americans live outside of metropolitan areas.

Increase Care for Children

About 24% of children in rural settings are battling poverty.

Work to Keep Rural Hospitals Viable

Within the past 25 years, more than 470 rural hospitals have shut down due to loss of funding.

Increase Accessibility for Mental Health Services

Close to 20% of rural counties lack mental health services compared to only 5% of metropolitan counties.

Treatment for Hypertension in Rural America

Risk for hypertension is much higher in rural areas. Factors such as isolation and overall aging may be contributing to this risk.

The 2024 Focus: Maternal Health in Rural Communities

The Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) has chosen “Advancing Maternal Health in Rural Communities” as this year’s theme, bringing much-needed attention to an issue that affects families at the most critical stages of life.

Economic decline, due to factors like the closure of industries and farms, often leads to increased behavioral health issues and migration of younger residents to cities. Moreover, rural communities of color face additional barriers, such as living in “food deserts,” which contribute to higher rates of chronic conditions like hypertension and cardiovascular disease
